Real Men of Othercross #2
Genre(s):

The man was “Oh God I wanna have your baby” good in bed and now… well… she's gonna have his baby and he's nowhere in sight.

After one passionate night, witch Iris Holloway is left with more than just the memory of the sexiest vampire she’d ever met–she's pregnant. And the little bladder squasher inside her belly seems to take great joy in reminding her of its presence at the most inopportune moments. Like when she's sitting in judgment over another witch in her job as an Othercross Sentinel. It's hard to focus on justice when a gal's gotta pee.

It's also hard to focus when when the baby’s father shows up at her work after seven long months, trying to claim her as his Beloved. Ridiculous! If they were truly fated for each other, he never would have left her. The smoking hot vamp is just jealous that Iris has moved on and found a guy who will stick around for more than just one night.

Fate hasn’t been kind to Trina Edgecomb. When her fated mate died on their honeymoon, she was left to face a long and bleak life utterly alone. Of course, as the healer to a very rambunctious wolf pack, she’s never truly alone, but nothing will ever ease her crushing solitude.

Rogue wolf Max Kincaid has only one purpose: To bring down the developer who destroyed his pack and his life. He’s tracked the man to the small town of Tremble, Georgia, and he’s just waiting for his moment to strike. Except, before he can fulfill his destiny, he’s ambushed in the woods and left to die.

When Trina finds Max on death’s doorstep, a spark she thought was long dead stirs to life and she realizes that she’s somehow found her fated mate. How was it even possible to have two in a lifetime? But the bigger question is whether a rogue wolf can integrate into an established pack. That’s assuming the Soren pack alpha won’t banish him on sight.

Just because Ally Rose can turn into a wolf, doesn't mean that she's happy about her status as a shape-shifting, occasionally howling, never-butt-sniffing werewolf. Packs are evil…violent…deadly… And the wolf who turned her is the worst of the worst.

Just because Kade Blackwood is the Alpha’s brother, doesn’t mean he can ignore a direct order — even when it’s something as mundane as packing up an old woman’s belongings and hauling them back to the pack house in Ashwood. But all of his good intentions fly out of the window the moment he steps foot in tiny Pepper, Georgia…and smells her. His mate.

The nanite window was shattered. The Araimi shielded nanite window was shattered.

Elle Davenport let that word linger in her mind, repeating the syllables with every step nearer to the empty window frame.

Sha.

Ttered.

Sha.

Ttered.

By the stars, shattered.

Her heart rate doubled, blood and adrenaline rushed through her veins at an ever-increasing pace, and air heaved in and out of her lungs. She wasn’t a worrier by nature—worry, not panic, because Davenports didn’t panic—but she was a little concerned by what she saw.

Yes, concern was an excellent word. Not worry and definitely not panic.

Charred remnants of tech framed the portal, sparks flickering and raining down on the concrete sidewalk. A sea of dark sand covered the pale gray walkway, disabled nanites forming a soft bed of deactivated robotics.

She continued on her path toward the destruction, her heels clicking on the hard ground. She wanted to break into a run, race to the building, push past the growing crowd, and dash through the entry.

But Davenports did none of those things. They were stately. They walked. They did not touch others and simply stared until a lesser moved. Hair always remained in place, and they never ever sweat or allowed anyone to see them in any way other than perfect.

People who tell pregnant women to walk during labor because it will make things “easier” had never pushed a watermelon out of a hole the size of a lemon. Lana was fully prepared to take a watermelon and shove it up the next person’s hole if they even talked to her—though she did stop short of imagining what she’d do if they gave her additional advice.  That was one bloody fantasy she wouldn’t mind indulging.

Unfortunately, it’d have to wait a little while. Specifically, until she gave birth and recovered. Then she was all over being War Mistress and mate to the Preor War Master, Taulan.

All over it.

She’d bloody him up, too, while she was at it.  He was the one who’d gotten her pregnant, and not with one alien baby, but with twins.

Twins. Two. More than one.  She still hadn’t quite wrapped her head around that concept.  Twins didn’t run in her family and the Knowing—the blood history of the Preor that she gained when she met Taulan—couldn’t provide her with probabilities since human-Preor matings were still a bit of a mystery.

She breathed deep and reached for a nearby piece of furniture, one of the chairs she’d had brought to the ship from Earth.  Since her mate didn’t have large dragon wings like other Preor, they hadn’t needed the backless seating that populated others’ quarters.

Wings… tears stung her eyes when she thought of all her mate had lost.  Even more blurred her vision when she realized she was crying—again.  She cried because she was crying. And then she cried harder because hormones made her cry.

And as for the hedgehog… she’s freaking purrfect.

This short story is set in the RIDGEVILLE SERIES and does not stand alone. This is a little bite of family life for those who fell in love with the Ridgeville gang and aren’t ready to let them go.

“Ladies, if someone tells you that you’ll forget the pain of childbirth, they’re straight up liars.  The reminder of that pain is a whining, crying, poop factory that sticks around until its eighteen, and its sole purpose in life is to clam jam its mother when she wants to get her freak on.”  -- Maya O’Connell, Prima of the Ridgeville pride and woman who most recently had her taco block-o-ed by the aforementioned spawns of Satan.

Maya hadn’t killed her children yet, and she didn’t want to ruin a nice fourteen-year streak over a…

Screw it. Yes, yes she did want to ruin the streak.

She breathed deeply and sought calm, trying very hard not to scream the house down.  Her inner lioness told her to rip their den apart with her bare claws until they found the little rodents.

Not that her kids were rodents, but it was easier to kill them if she thought of them as mice and not, well, her kids.

No, no, no… She couldn’t get rid of them yet. She’d have to wait until after dinner. If she hunted them right that second, she’d have to explain everything to Alex, and then he’d try to be the one to kill them. He was not stealing her bloody, claw-tipped thunder this time. Which meant she had to keep her overwhelming ragefire—anyone but her kids would get hatefire—under wraps.

She drew in another slow breath, fighting for a calm that seemed totally out of reach, and got a lungful of… Alex.

Alex, her mate.

Alex, the father of her children.

Alex, worshipper of the vagina.  At the moment, she really wished he was in a worshipping mood because that was the only thing that would fix the hot mess surrounding her. And by hot mess, she meant the completely missing spread of bow-chicka-bow-bow-inducing delicacies that’d previously decorated the dining room table.  All that was left were a few scraps and very familiar claw marks marring the solid wood surface.

If she had to tell her kids no claws in the house one more time… Well, she already planned on murdering them, so she’d just make sure it was painful.

Genre(s):

Mia’s looking forward to a lazy Sunday afternoon with friends, family, furballs, and veggie dogs. (For her daughter Sophia, don’t ask.)  But what begins with laughs soon ends with tears… of grief? Or joy?

This short story is set in the GRAYSLAKE: MORE THAN MATED world and does not stand alone. It should be read after HOWL MY NAME and is a little bit of family life for those who fell in love with the Grayslake gang and aren’t ready to let them go.

Read an Excerpt

Six years into Mia’s mating with Ty and she’d gone from a cub in her pantry to a bun in her oven. Well, a second bun. Her first biological bun was—at that moment—attempting to talk her adopted son into making a break for freedom.

They didn’t want to stick around and listen to adults talk at some stinking barbecue. Not even promises of all the pork and green beans they could eat ended the whining. (Pork for Parker and green beans for her still-vegetarian daughter Sophia.) Don’t even get Mia started about that. A vegetarian werebear? Even the Southeast Itan—the territory’s regional werebear leader—had never heard of such a thing.

A familiar scent teased her nose, one she knew better than any others, and she mentally groaned.

“You gonna tell him anytime soon?” The deep, rumbly voice held a teasing note and then she groaned aloud.

“Dad.” She even whined… and not just a little. “I haven’t even taken a test.”

Though, really, she didn’t need to. Mia knew her own body, and well… yeah.

Her father chuckled and laid his massive arm across her shoulders, the weight both welcome and comforting. She leaned her head onto his shoulder and breathed deep, taking in the scents of home. He wasn’t her biological father, but Thomas Baker was even better—he was the father of her heart.

“Little cub, the day I don’t recognize a change in my own daughter’s scent is the day they put me in the ground.”

She elbowed him. “No talking about being put in the ground.”

I’m Caith Morningstar: bar owner, leather wearer, shoe worshipper, werewolf, Orlando’s resident ass kicker and… Satan’s niece.

For the love of all that is unholy, I really thought the demons of the world were smarter than to screw with me. But they’re doing it. Again.  Catatonic people are being found across the city, all of them members of a new cult.  All the followers have to do is pray to their new goddess and all will be well… while she sucks the very life out of them. What makes it worse? The bitch involved my son in her schemes. Didn’t she learn what happens when someone touches what’s mine? I’ll be sure to show her.

Add in Uncle Luc’s arrival with his still pregnant baby momma along with a request to keep her safe, and my life is just awesome. (Total sarcasm.)

It isn’t long before I realize the “goddess” wants to destroy the world, and her ticket to the top is through the baby in the mommy-to-be’s belly.

Now I’m running, I’m killing, I’m saving the world, and I’m… trying to hang on to my angelic mate, Sam.  I’m pretty sure I’m going to fail at one of those. I just hope it’s not Sam.

I tossed back a shot of demonic moonshine, enjoying the scorching burn of the alcohol sliding down my throat. I licked the rim of the glass, capturing the last drop, and then slammed it down on the table. A spider web of cracks slithered up the side. It wasn’t the first time I’d broken that glass, and it wouldn’t be the last by the time the night was through.

I called for a flick of hellfire, just teasing the first circle of Hell, and used it to smooth out those fractures.  The move also sent the last tiny bits of alcohol bursting into flames, sparks of black and red leaping into the air.

Bonus, the ritual gave me a chance to recover a little. The stuff made my head spin like nothing else—the demonic part of the moonshine was literal, not metaphorical. It was brewed in vats heated by the flames of Hell itself, tainted by a touch of sulfur, and then seasoned with the screams of the damned.  Tasty.

It would drive mortals crazy if the scent even teased their noses.

It’d kill them if they actually drank the stuff.

The creature sitting across the table wasn’t any more human than me. Eh, probably less. I was technically one-sixth human. But since that bit came from my sword swinging, immortalized holy warrior from the crusades daddy… I’m not really sure how “human” that part really is.

My drinking partner—opponent—was part dem and part vamp. Maybe even a little dragon on the side since he had that vertical slit in his eyes thing going on.  Okay, I wasn’t totally sure and I definitely didn’t care. Because regardless, he had the stamina of a demigod and there weren’t many who could drink him under the table.
